Cryptocurrency "dust" refers to tiny amounts of coins or tokens that become practically unspendable due to transaction fees exceeding their value. This is particularly noticeable with UTXO-based coins like Bitcoin (BTC), where small UTXOs can pile up over time, leading to unspent balances that can’t be used.

What Is UTXO and Why Does It Matter?

UTXO stands for Unspent Transaction Outputs and is the mechanism that determines your balance in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC). Instead of showing a single balance, your wallet balance is made up of multiple smaller UTXOs. These are leftover amounts from previous transactions that have yet to be spent.

Tip: Keep an eye on UTXOs, as their accumulation can result in "dust" – small leftover amounts that can become unspendable due to transaction fees.

The Mystery Behind Dust Errors in Crypto Transactions

Dust errors occur when the value of a UTXO is too small to cover the transaction fee. When you try to send crypto and the balance consists entirely of dust-sized UTXOs, the system can't process the transaction because the fee exceeds the value of the funds.

Why it happens:

  • Tiny UTXOs: Small UTXOs from previous transactions build up over time.
  • Transaction Fee Challenge: The transaction fee often outweighs the small amount of crypto you're trying to send.

Note: A screen error like “Please consider decreasing the sending amount or topping up the balance” usually appears when you try to spend a dust amount.

How to Manage Dust and Optimize Your Transactions

To avoid dust errors and ensure smooth transactions, here’s what you can do:

  1. Avoid Tiny Transactions: Tiny transactions lead to high fees. If possible, avoid sending minimal amounts that result in dust.
  2. Use the ‘Max Amount’ Option: This option helps you send the maximum amount of funds, eliminating smaller dust UTXOs in the process.
  3. Adjust the Transaction Fee: If only dust UTXOs remain, reducing the transaction fee may help. However, keep in mind that lowering the fee can slow down the transaction.

Next Steps: If you encounter a dust error, you have two options:

  1. Increase your balance: Add more funds to cover the transaction fee.
  2. Wait for network congestion to reduce: Lower network demand typically results in reduced transaction fees.

Checking Your UTXOs

Although Trust Wallet doesn’t display individual UTXOs, you can check them using blockchain explorers like blockchair.com. These tools provide insight into your UTXOs and help you track potential dust.

For the latest features to help you manage UTXOs and dust, make sure you’ve downloaded the most recent version of Trust Wallet: trustwallet.com/download.
